Hunter Region Bridges – Martin Bridge, Old Mooney Mooney, Dawson Bridge

Project Overview

Over three years MU Group provided Project Management and development services to Transport for NSW on three bridges across the Hunter Region – Old Mooney Mooney, Dawson Bridge, and most recently Martin Bridge. This includes design management, bridge rehabilitation, temporary works, construction and environmental management.

Maintaining the historic Martin Bridge for the community of Taree

Valued at $35M, work has commenced on the Martin Bridge at Taree. The project forms part of the Hunter regions bridge painting program to remove hazardous coatings and extend the life of critical steel structural assets.

Project highlights

01

Challenges we overcame

The main entrance to Taree being Martin Bridge presented a challenge for paint removal. Furthermore, the level of environmental controls and management required for this task was significantly higher. Our team has developed an underhung 11.2m wide by up 35m long scaffold system to enable the repairs/rehabilitation works to be undertaken without disrupting the daily traffic using the bridge.

02

Heritage-listed Bridge

Martin Bridge is listed on the local heritage register so proposals for repairs or strengthening of the bridge needed to be harmonious with the bridge’s heritage aesthetic. The bridge also sits adjacent to a nearby Coocumbac island that holds significant aboriginal heritage items that must not be disturbed during delivery.

Seamless Procurement Process

As the SME and client representative, MU Group managed all procurement activities, day-to-day management and coordination of the Contractor’s team, and critical interactions with the TfNSW project team and stakeholders. This included the tender strategy, industry participation, documentation and evaluation in accordance with TfNSW requirements.

Flood Recovery Support

MU Group supported Transport in Flood Recovery caused by a flood event during delivery. MU Group oversaw a major crane and barge operation to recover damaged scaffolding impacting the structure, working closely with TfNSW to restore this critical infrastructure.
